Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis Can be Caused by Other Diseases and Treatments

Medical treatment for breast cancer, prostate cancer, arthritis and other diseases can cause osteoporosis

OsteoporosisOsteoporosis can be a side effect of another disease or the treatment for the disease. For example:
  • Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa or bulimia)
  • Longtime use of corticosteroids to treat diseases such as arthritis and asthma
  • Weight loss surgery that bypasses a large part of your intestine
  • Hormone therapy for prostate cancer
  • Breast cancer treatments that lower estrogen levels or induce early menopause

If you have any of these diseases, or have had any of these treatments, be sure to talk to your doctor about the possibility of osteoporosis. Your doctor may want you to see a specialist in the Metabolic Bone Program to help you maintain as much bone density as possible during your medical care.
